Okay Calgary Tweet’ers we have a maybe in mind but we don’t think its the right fit and wanted to ask you guys/girls who were so helpful in selecting a charity to support if you have any great suggestions for a location. We need to choose one soon so your assistance would be really appreciated!

Here are the requirements and if your suggestion meets those requirements then please comment below:

  1. Licensed to serve alcohol
  2. No charge for the use of their location
  3. Have a capacity for over 100 attendees
  4. Allow us to make it a ticketed event
  5. And if possible close to the downtown area so we can make it equally easy for anyone to attend.

Lets make this Twestival the best one yet and with your help we can make it happen!

Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids

Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids

Hi Everyone!

I have some exciting news, as of today Brown Bagging for Calgary Kids [Website Link | Twitter Link] has been selected as the Charity Calgary Twestival will support. This means all revenue from the event and any sponsorships will flow into helping kids in Calgary.

What does Brownbagging do?

They help feed children in need at school by providing free lunches. Think about what that would me to a child who is hungry for whatever reason and some kind volunteer offered them food to sit and eat with their friends. How would that change your life experience?

Joanne’s Story

“Having hungry kids in Calgary schools is both shocking and unacceptable. To prepare and extra lunch for a child in need, is an easy  short term solution. We need to think collectively when it comes to caring for all of Calgary’s Kids. When we raised awareness about child hunger through our Paper Bag Princess campaign, parents, teachers and children responded with amazing understanding and commitment.” – Joanne

Every day, thousands of kids go hungry in Calgary. Lack of proper nutrition leads to decreased concentration in school, poor health, lack of attention and reduced academic performance.

Their future is our future. Make it your problem.

Do you have a brownbagging story? If so we would love to hear it!

FYI You can follow Calgary Twestival @yycfestivals and on Facebook.

Secret Calgary Twestival sponsor revealed!

spinvox - the guys that take your voice and transcribe it to text for your phone

Taking your voice and converting it to text for your phone

About two weeks ago, on a whim Roger Kondrat reached out to longtime Twitterati and mobile guru James Whatley (pic) aka Whatleydude to see if SpinVox would be interested to sponsor Calgary’s Twestival.

Late last week it was official, SpinVox would sponsor the Calgary event with over 100 accounts being given away to every attendee of the event. These accounts are worth quite a bit of money, can be used on any service you belong to and it doesn’t matter which phone either!

And the absolute de jour is that these accounts won’t be active for only 30 days or even 90 days, nope they will be active for 12 months from the day you activate them. Looking around at the various offers thats a value of $75+ and a total contribution from SpinVox of nearly $1500 to Calgary Twestival.

SpinVox
Let me tell you a bit about SpinVox they are one of only a couple services in the world that offer voice to text for cell (mobile) phones. You call, leave a voicemail like you would normally and voila in moments you get a complete translation of the voicemail as a text message on your cell phone.

As well you get an email with the text and SpinVox even keep the audio too. If on the rare occasion there is a (heaven forbid) mistranslation you can just call in and listen to your voicemail just as you would normally.

I have found their service to be most desirable for more than a few situations but here are two (business and personal) of my favourites.

1) You are in a meeting and you get a call from someone important and you know its a 50/50 chance it could be the kind of call you need to take but because you are in a meeting you must decide to either walk out or ignore the call. If you have voice to text you can just review the text that comes in immediately afterwards and make an informed decision.

2) You are in a noisy environment e.g. bar, restaurant etc and a friend calls trying to find out where you are at the location or about a change in plans for the evening. In this situation if you answer the phone you either have to leave the noisy environment to take the call or you can just wait for the text message SpinVox will send in moments after the call.

Accuracy? I hear that question all the time but honestly maybe 2-3 times has SpinVox ever made an error in transcribing my voicemails and I have used it for over a year now. My experience using the service included having a variety of accents from France, Quebec (Canada), Germany, India and China speaking English.

Disclosure: I (@roger) am a huge fan of SpinVox, long time customer and a friend of James Whatley.

Buy your tickets before tomorrow - HURRY!

Posted on: 9 February 2009 at 1624 - Comment

Tomorrow we are going to be on CityTV’s Breakfast show in front of 10,000+ viewers and we don’t have very many tickets left!

If you have been procrastinating please don’t any longer because if a few 1/10ths of a percent buy tickets there won’t be a single seat left. Remember this is a Twitter festival and we would be really saddened if our fellow Twitterati were unable to get tickets.

Also there are a very very limited supply of 2 tickets for $30 left and so if you are bring a friend or partner then you can be sure by tomorrow morning if nothing else those tickets will surely be gone.

Remember as much fun as we know you will have getting free stuff, and listening to Calgary’s social media leaders at the event take a moment to remember that somewhere in the world a village will get fresh water due to your purchase.

Thanks the Calgary Twestival Team

Calgary’s Theatre Community Rocks - A Thank You

Posted on: at 1204 - Comment

Calgary has been blessed with a strong growing theatre arts community. PlayRites festival is currently happening over at ATP, and the High Performance Rodeo happened earlier in January showcasing cutting edge theatre.

The arts community is starting to find a home on twitter as well. You can follow @TheatreJunction, @lunchboxtheatre, @CalgaryArtsDev, and maybe even me if you wanted to hook up for a show (@wintr).

The Organizers of Calgary Twestival want to thank the theatre community that showed up and helped us out with door prizes for this event. Together, they donated ten seats to professional shows in the upcoming season. Although the Arts can be a harsh mistress, the people involved are full of the spirit of community and charity.

Urban Curves - http://www.urbancurvz.com/

The Calgary community is teaming with intelligent and talented women looking for consistent creative challenges. Urban Curvz want to see more professional productions that provide female artists with engaging artistic opportunities. By encouraging and giving priority to the women artists of Canada they wish to celebrate the female experience as a source of autonomous art.

Lunchbox Theatre - http://www.lunchboxtheatre.com

From a foundation of one-act plays, they are committed to creating and performing high quality theatrical works. Lunchbox Theatre delivers a unique experience to its audience – upbeat performances in an intimate and comfortable atmosphere. Sage Theatre - http://www.sagetheatre.com

Sage Theatre produces evocative professional theatre in an intimate environment. They are passionate about providing local theatre professionals and talented emerging artists with opportunities to tell stories that speak to the human condition. Every year they host the Ignite festival, which is a powerhouse showcase of local emerging talent.

Theatre Junction - http://www.theatrejunction.com

Theatre Junction set out to create a space to think collectively and to activate the individual as a participant in a vibrant society, where the artist and the spectator bring thetare to life and make apparent it’s diversity, vitality, and necessity. As Calgary’s ‘culturehouse’ of contemporary live arts, they are the ‘junction’ where people, ideas, and art forms converge to celebrate differences, open new possibilities, and move in new directions.
